Bob Hamman, twelve-time world bridge champion and father of the promotional risk coverage industry, recently added another notch to his belt: the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs. This is Hamman’s 50th lifetime North American Bridge Championship, the most of any bridge competitor.
Hamman and his partner, Justin Lall, were tied for 10th place going into the third day of the event, but quickly moved their way up to capture the lead in the second final and secure the win on March 18.
Hamman last won the world championship in September of 2009, when he led the United States in victory over their nemesis Italy. He is currently a part of the Nick Nickell team but will begin a new regular partnership with Lall, the youngest player to ever achieve Grand Master Life status, this summer at the North American Bridge Championships.
Showing no signs of slowing down, Hamman will compete for another world championship this August if his team qualifies. “I’m still playing pretty good. I like to play. It’s nothing more complicated than that. What else am I going to do, watch TV?” Hamman says.
When he is not playing in bridge championships, Hamman uses his gift for computing the odds to run Dallas-based SCA Promotions, the leader in the promotional risk coverage industry. SCA Promotions determines the odds for the contests they cover, such as $1 Million half-court shots, hole-in-one contests, or over-redemption coverage for some of the biggest brands and businesses in the country. Hamman then uses those numbers to charge the promotion sponsor a fee for covering the grand prize. When there’s a promotion winner, SCA gives the promotion sponsor the money to award their winner. Since 1986, SCA Promotions has covered billions in prizes and paid out nearly $170 million in cash and prizes.
